J, I think you would be shocked to realize how many of your students are able to get access to this type of medium. Look how many of your students have cell phones? Can they afford them? Somehow they do... My vote is you push forward with this approach (in moderation) and see what type of results you yield. Good luck!

I started flipping six years ago. We had over 20% without Internet at home. To solve this we simply burned the videos onto DVDs and sent them home. All kids had at one time rented a movie from blockbuster.

This is something I would love to try, but I know that nearly half of my students lack effective online capabilities at home, won't use the local library, and other legitimate reasons for doing anything that smacks of homework.

Regardless, for self-motivated students and those looking for an edge, I can see this working quite well. I imagine that homeschooled students (if they can access it) will truly benefit.

ironically, i have been implementing this in my classroom in various ways for around 3 years. and my students are highly rsistant, mostly for reasons of a local culture of doing and accepting the minimum as opposed to the method per se.

they hate it because when i get them (sophomore in high school) they think they know what is necessary to get their d and move on and they resist having to learn how to do things differently.

i love the concept, and am embracing it and fine tuning it constantly, but no idea not even one seemingly as good as this will be a cure all.

i do encourage any teachers on here to explore it though.

I think the Kahn Academy gets enough money from the government not to have to outsource their teaching onto the parents.

I also thought this. It does lay bigger cost burden on the students. But the system itself is intriguing. After all, colleges have been following something similar for a good while, at least in introductory classes. There's a huge lecture which people may or may not attend, and then a more intimately-sized tutorial class with a teaching assistant for questions and explanations. And it works pretty well.

Refer to

Teaching Boys and Girls How to Study (1919) by Peter Jeremiah Zimmers, Superintendent of city schools Manitowoc, Wisconsin
(available free on Google Books)

for a very good discussion of using a form (the problem method) of this method to transform the Manitowoc schools nearly 100 years ago. One wonders why it was lost or pushed aside for a return to the methods that promote "school helplessness."

Perhaps the flipping is just the enhancement needed to make this method work wholesale turning the teacher into more a coach than quarterback.
