Columbia 300 accepting applications for jowdy scholarship
Scholarship named for hall of fame bowler John Jowdy; Application deadline April 1, 2010
It’s that time of year again — spring has arrived and high school seniors are beginning to dream of the strains of Pomp and Circumstance, mortar boards and turning tassels from right to left, as they are deemed graduates.
And with the world an open book waiting for its pages to be filled, it’s not too late for students to get scholarships. One scholarship open to bowlers is the John Jowdy Scholarship Fund from Columbia 300.
The John Jowdy Scholarship Fund is awarded annually to a graduating high school senior who is actively involved in the sport of bowling.
All interested parties must submit a completed application. Application deadline is April 1, 2010.
Award recipients will be selected based upon information provided on the applications; applicants will be required to provide transcripts upon official notification of award. The amount of the scholarship award is $500 per year, for up to 4 years of post-secondary education. The award recipients must maintain a 3.0 grade point average (4.0 systems) to retain the yearly scholarship.
John Jowdy was inducted into the PBA Hall of Fame in 1988 and the American Bowling Congress Hall of Fame in 2001 for meritorious service to the game. He has been an instructor to many PBA champions and hundreds of others, a Columbia 300 sales representative, and a bowling writer.
A native of San Antonio, Jowdy has provided coverage of the tour to many of the nation’s leading bowling publications.
“Mr. Jowdy has been the face of the Columbia 300 brand for a long time,” said Columbia 300 Brand Manager Chad Murphy. “We take great pride here with this scholarship in supporting a youth bowler with their continuing education opportunities long term in John’s name.”
Applications are reviewed by a committee made up of representatives from the Bowling Writers Association of America and Columbia 300.
