“Making the best decision about college means getting the best possible information. Who better to write this book than a bright high-school senior and her father.Congratulations to Cole and Eric on a job well done.”
–Robert L. Shook, New York Times bestselling author
(December 17, 2009; New York, NY) In January, a new book by bestselling author of five business and leadership books and president of CollegeClickTV.com, Eric Yaverbaum, and his 17-year-old daughter, Cole, who is currently a high school senior applying to colleges — Life’s Little College Admissions Insights: TOP TIPS FROM THE COUNTRY’S MOST ACCLAIMED GUIDANCE COUNSELORS (Morgan James Publishing; Trade paperback: $14.95; Hardcover: $24.95) — which was compiled and written during Cole’s actual college application and search process, hits the bookstores nationwide.
Because it was written in ‘real time’ during this process — in addition to offering over 100 gems of hard-earned wisdom from America’s leading guidance counselors – the book provides a first-hand account of the college search process from the perspectives of both Eric, the parent, and Cole, the student. It brings to vivid life the potentially overwhelming, but often-times fun, joyous and rewarding, experience of a family researching, visiting, applying to, and, finally, choosing the school that Cole felt was the best fit for her. Glenn Pere, founder of CollegeClickTV.com noted, “This book is the absolute best ‘first read’ that anyone conducting a responsible collegiate search must have.” CollegeClickTV.com is currently offering a $500 scholarship to one talented student every month. (For details about this, see ‘Scholarship’ at www.CollegeClickTV.com.)
In her ‘Parting Advice’ in Life’s Little College Admissions Insights, Cole shares many of her own practical but often overlooked tips, like “taking notes and photos are extremely useful when visiting colleges…they can be excellent reminders of what you liked best about each school,” and “I kept a rolling list of schools I visited, “explaining that after each visit, she researched the school’s website to see if they had the programs and majors she was seeking.
Her dad, Eric, sums up his ‘Parting Advice’ of the experience by saying, “Be a good CFO and do your homework. Be a partner. Be interested. Impart a little wisdom. And don’t miss this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be fully engaged at this particular crossroad of your child’s life.”
The heart of the book is comprised of seven chapters, each asking a single key question of the country’s most acclaimed guidance counselors. These questions are:
· What is one college top that nobody ever seems to know?
· What is the first piece of advice you would give to your own child about getting into college?
· What is the one piece of advice you’ve given that’s worked best for people?
· What do students have to do differently today from one year ago, in terms of college admissions?
· Do you have a tip that includes an SAT word?
· {What are your} Pearls of Wisdom? And
· {What is your} Parting Advice?
This one-stop primer provides a “Resources” College Timeline chapter that’s broken down into a month-by-month format that guides college-seeking high school students to know just how to proceed and prioritize, as well as handy lists of links to the best websites for Financial Aid Scholarships, College Life, Test Prep, and college Athletics.
Finally, the book features a poignant and memorable Sample College Essay written by co-author, Cole Yaverbaum, about her love and profound admiration for her mother ,who’s been coping with multiple sclerosis since Cole’s childhood,in which Cole clearly heeds the advice of two top guidance counselors quoted in the book, who say “The most powerful and effective personal statements are rooted in personal experiences…If possible, connect the wisdom gained from this experience to your personal, college, or career goals” and “The ability to overcome adversity is a strong and positive personality characteristic.”
