The Edinburgh Academy Appoints New Head of Junior School

09 November 2010, Edinburgh: The Edinburgh Academy has appointed a new Headteacher of the Junior School following an extensive recruitment process. Mr Gavin Calder will join the Academy from the start of the summer term in April 2011.

Gavin’s wealth of experience includes Deputy Head of Robert Gordon’s College Junior School in Aberdeen and Deputy Headmaster of Loretto Junior School near Edinburgh.  He has been Headteacher of Lomond Primary School since 2007.

Mr Calder replaces former Head of the Junior School, Caroline Bashford, who is leaving the Academy after seven years in the role.   Mrs Bashford left the school at the October half term, moving to Grantown Primary School.  Her husband Dr Ian Bashford is Medical Director of NHS Highland.

Mr Calder said: “I am very excited at the prospect of joining the Edinburgh Academy and taking advantage of the excellent facilities, not only in the classroom but for sport, science and the arts. The school has an excellent reputation for educating each child as an individual and an inclusive atmosphere which I look forward to joining.”

Edinburgh Academy Rector, Marco Longmore, said of the appointment: “Mr Calder brings with him considerable experience of successful HMC Junior Schools. All of the staff and pupils look forward to welcoming him and his family to the school community”

In addition to his professional credentials, Gavin Calder has represented Great Britain in the Triathlon World Championships and is a keen musician. Ben Dean remains Acting Head of the Junior School until Mr Calder’s arrival.
