China is Michigan’s future, not its enemy

10.6.10 – Tom Watkins – The news that China surpassed Japan to become the second largest economy in the world grabbed international headlines recently. China’ miracle includes double-digit economic growth, the production of more cars than the U.S., hundreds of millions of Chinese rising out of abject poverty into the middle class and now the emergence of 875,000 Chinese multi- millionaires and 55,000 billionaires.

What may be more frightening are the political arguments swirling around Michigan and America at election time — politicians pandering for votes, slamming China and complaining about outsourced jobs rather than taking action to create opportunities in China.

Hockey great Wayne Gretzky, when asked about what makes him “great” responded: “I skate to where the puck will be- not where it is.” If we want to compete with China and with the other BRIC (Brazil, Russia, China and India) countries, we might consider taking Gretsky’s view.

Where is our competitiveness investment as a state? How is state government working with the private sector to assure that China’s rise does not come at our demise?
