Government Of the People, By the People, For the People

Ban Large Campaign Contributions, Limit Legislative Terms

by Peter Stern

Our government does NOT work in the best interests of the people it is supposed to serve. In fact, our government and the business sector have driven a bigger wedge between the extremely wealthy and very poor.

Most of the American people have a harder life than in previous years. Unemployment has not been at this level since The Great Depression of the 1930′s. There are few jobs for Americans to apply for. More are becoming homeless. Our government and citizens are stuck in massive debt with no foreseeable change for the better. Will the U.S. and most of its citizens soon file for bankruptcy and start over?

So, bottom-line, how can the we change government so that it works more for the people it is supposed to serve? Unfortunately, there is not too much we can do.

In truth it is the wealthy corporate sectors and foreign entities that have purchased the best government money can buy. Since most legislators continue to turn-up their palms awaiting big dollars from wealthy special interests, the future looks even more grim and menacing for the rest of us.

In addition, since it does NOT seem to matter much WHO we vote in — after all, Obama was voted in against great odds and he has not been able to change much for the better — the only thing to do is to demand changes to the laws that regulate campaign contributions and to limit the terms of those serving in Congress. We must do something to break the pattern of government of, by and for big dollars.

During the past several decades exorbitant campaign contributions, perks and endless term limits have been significant causes for the decay within our government. Our leaders can NOT seem to remain ethical and loyal to the American people. Money comes first.

U.S. citizens will continue to face political, social and financial hardships without clear and strong changes to the laws governing campaign contributions and limiting term limits for members of Congress.

In addition, our lax illegal immigration laws and the outsourcing of American jobs have extended the level of damage to the general population.

Realistically, it appears that there is little hope for Americans to better their future and those of future generations WITHOUT profoundly changing the current status in Washington, D.C. Limiting campaign contributions and job terms seem to be the first logical steps.
