Where there are IB programs, essays get written. True. But IB, good though it is, is very prescribed and not for everyone. Everyone needs to be learning to think through issues by writing essays, in all schools.

I'm surprised you didn't mention the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program, which has been around since the 1960s and has required an Extended Essay (3500-4000 words) for all diploma candidates. The Diploma Program exists in many U.S. public schools and is the gold standard for a rigorous curriculum. The AP is merely playing catch-up in developing its essay course.

It feels so good to know that I am not the only one pushing for research papers! I recently had a disagreement with the 8th grade English teacher because she insisted that 8th graders "could not handle" a formal research paper in MLA style. She doesn't seem to understand that the frustration she refuses to experience with 8th graders is then passed on down the line until the students get to me. This year I got a batch of seniors in my AP English Literature class who had never written a formal research paper before. Because MLA style was brand new to them, they struggled with it, and they're supposedly the cream of the crop.
Students need to know how to write a formal research paper some time, and it will be frustrating and difficult the first time, but Mr. FitzHugh has the right idea in introducing the paper as early as possible and building it year by year until it is not the big scary thing that many students see it as today.

Will Fitzhugh has been doing all of us, especially our students, a great favor for a long time in a lonely, but necessary, battle. Thank you, Ms. Steiny, for your article, and "YOU GO, WILL!"
