My granddaughter goes to the school at ASMA, first year, and is doing very well. Her first day, she came home and did her homework right away, First time ever the assignments were on the computer via email. She returned the assignment when, she was done via email. In the past it was like pulling teeth to get her to do it. I believe the atmosphere, attitude and expectations are part of the change in her attidtude. That is all related to the teachers. We need more schools like it.

Go back and look at the graphs. The second one shows the low group's scores coming into the schools. They are by no means high-fliers. The Point of those graphs is to show the extent to which the school took those low achievers and helped them almost uniformly get to proficiency. They have a very diverse school, in all respects.

it is a concern to me that so much time spent on math and science is leading to a less diverse education.

Apparently the trick to STEM success is having a high admissions standards and pushing the brightest hardest working students to achieve more by providing them with the expectations and resources. Typical Russian idea. Selective high schools for STEM. Some lessons can be learned for public ed overall, but this can not serve as a complete model for STEM reform.

The trick to success in math and science is to get second-graders fluent at giving correct answers to basic addition facts.
