I'm curious. Did you grow up in this country? And how far did you got in K-12 education? And how long have you been away from school?

I'm currently enrolled in a community college in Texas, when i first took the accuplacer test, i was basically lost. I didn't pass the reading and math but, i scored okay on my writing. I'm currently taking remedial courses for my math. I pass all my basic math courses, now i'm taking advance algebra. I'm having such a hard time passing the reading test. I know it's due to not being taught the basic skills to comprehend college level reading, rusty basic skills will will send you a black hole.

I never heard of it until now. I was intrigued enough to spend an hour going over Q&A. Didn't realize the A's were at the end, but didn't go back to check my own because I did most in my head until I came to the college level math.

Wish I had been able to do them all in my head, but as of now, I'd definitely have to take a remedial math course because I'm pretty sure I couldn't pass the college level math section of the test.

This was a REAL EYE OPENER. I'll bet at least 90% of elementary teachers in Providence wouldn't be able to pass the tests allowing them into a community college, let alone a college/university.

I specified Providence because I taught in the public schools there for 30 years. The last seven of those years, because I ran a computer lab and worked with every student in 2 different schools, I had a chance to interact with every teacher in each building.

I'll bet the majority of public school elementary teachers IN THIS COUNTRY would have a hard time passing the College Board ACCUPLACER exam.

In fact, I'll go so far to suggest that one of the criteria for teacher evaluations should be for them to pass the test. Failure would result in them having to take couorses designed to get them to proficiency.

This is very worthwhile article on this particular type of testing. Thank you for publicizing something more than likely many have not heard about. I looked at some of the sentence skills practice questions and they seem fairly reasonable. I think the greatest concern here though is not so much about the aptitude of the student, but seemingly what they don't know can hurt them so to speak. This article is exactly what is needed to bring something so important to the forefront to get the necessary attention it so desperately needs.
