Watson discusses the importance of developing life long learners; however, I believe that we, as educators, are failing. It is hard to compete with the reality TV shows. There is also a contradiction in learning being a right, yet everything costs money including learning. The playing field is not level and I fear it may never be level. I think it is a noble aspiration to believe that everyone is entitled to solid educational experiences, but in a failing economy that is not reality.

The human being by definition learns as he continues his life. But what Watson is thinking about is the higher layers of lifelong education, fitting for a good university graduate.

By definition, we learn as we live. Even the manual worker who has no time for books, learns from his life experience.
But there are categories of lifelong learning, and I think they should be spelled out.

Some of us do not have the luxury of lifelong learning. Much of our lives is driven by necessity.

Lifelong learning is such a meaningful pursuit. But it isn't just about taking courses and reading, it is about learning from your environment, from the people you make, from the places you visit. It is an attitude, it is a desire to understand more about oneself and one's fellow men and women.

The English universities do seem to have a jump on the multi-cultural, multi-racial, multi-demographic student body. I wonder why they seem ahead of the US. Perhaps it's because all the universities there are state funded?

As someone who dearly wanted to go to Oxford but couldn't, I can say that the eggheads somehow managed to get it right there. This man, Sir David, seems to have been one of them.

If you look at the bulk of the population, they would rather go to the pub for a brew or watch rugby, football or cricket on the telly. So while they kick back the western nations lose ground to the Chinese.
