Colleges recruit more Latinos, which could mean more federal funding

11.1.10 – Efforts by local colleges to get Latino students to enroll and graduate from college are starting to show some success.

New campus census numbers at Metropolitan State College of Denver show that the enrollment of Latino and other minority students has increased rapidly since an initiative to become a Hispanic Serving Institution was put in place five years ago.

This school year, Metro State’s student body is 16 percent Latino, up from 13.5 percent last year, and 28.4 percent total minority, up from 24.8 percent.

To reach federal status as a Hispanic Serving Institution, Latino enrollment must reach 25 percent. The designation can mean more federal dollars.
