No male teachers in quarter of primary schools

9.3.10 – Growing numbers of primary schools have no male teachers, figures show, prompting fears that boys could be put off education at a young age.

Figures from the General Teaching Council for England show that almost three-in-10 primaries are now staffed entirely by women.

Male teachers make up just 12 per cent of the primary school workforce and just 44 men work in state-run nurseries, it was revealed.

The disclosure comes amid concerns that a lack of male role models may be putting boys off school at a young age and promoting the view that hard work is for girls – fuelling the gender gap in education.

Girls currently outperform boys at the age of seven and pull ahead throughout primary and secondary school.

They are far more likely to gain good GCSEs and A-levels in their late teens and graduate from university with a decent degree.

Academics warned that the shortage of male teachers was being exacerbated by societal concerns over paedophilia, combined with low pay and the idea that teaching young children is “women’s work”.
