Jennings to unload tech failure

State audit of school district blasted cost of hand-held devices, which went largely unused for years.

JENNINGS — Three years after spending $1.25 million on hand-held computers for classrooms, the Jennings School District may have finally figured out what to do with them:

Sell some at one-eighth their cost. And give others away to departing students, for free.

The Jennings School Board is set to vote tonight on selling 300 of the devices at $50 each to a St. Louis computer recycling center, a loss of about $350 per computer.

And, in a surprise presentation, the administration will suggest giving many of the 2,572 Palm T/Xs to seniors over the next three years, possibly as graduation incentives, said board President Miranda Jones.
