Why doesn’t reading more make us better readers?

Who has time to read? Surprise! Americans read more now than they did in 1980. A lot more, according to an exhaustive University of California, San Diego study. Why? More than ever, we are surrounded by printed words. We read text messages. We read web pages. We read instructions and information on computer games. If we’re reading more, why is literacy dropping? If you think that reading is a skill, then practice should improve the skill. We’re reading more than ever, so why aren’t we better than ever at reading? The problem is that, as I’ve noted before, reading comprehension is not a skill.

My guest today is cognitive scientist Daniel Willingham, a professor at the University of Virginia and author of "Why Don't Students Like School?"

We have supposedly been in the midst of an educational back-to-basics movement since the 1983 release of "A Nation at Risk," a report by a national commission that said American society was in danger of deteriorating because of an eroding public education system.

Why, then, have reading scores (as measured by the National Assessment of Educational Progress, a test often called the nation's report card), been flat since 1971?

One obvious answer is that even if we’re getting back to basics in school, kids read less and less outside of school. Think of all of the new technologies that compete for their time: they have ipods, video games, text messaging, instant messaging, cell phones.

Who has time to read?

Why? More than ever, we are surrounded by printed words. We read text messages. We read web pages. We read instructions and information on computer games.

But if we’re reading more, why is literacy dropping?

If you think that reading is a skill, then practice should improve the skill. We’re reading more than ever, so why aren’t we better than ever at reading? The problem is that, as I’ve noted before, reading comprehension is not a skill.

Decoding (that is, translating the letters on the page into sounds) is a skill. Practice is necessary for decoding to become fluent ( that is, fast and effortless). Once you’re fluent, the most important factor contributing to comprehension is background knowledge. If you know a bit about the topic, it’s much easier to understand.

A likely solution to the conundrum is that all that extra reading we’re doing is pretty lightweight.

The number of words read from conventional print sources (books, newspapers, magazines) has plummeted. In 1980 these sources accounted for 26 percent of the words read. In 2008 that figure was 9%. People today spend just 36 minutes each day reading traditional print materials.

Practice in reading lightweight material won’t improve your reading much. Reading content-rich material will. Thus, it’s not surprising that we’re reading more yet reading scores are stagnant.

There’s nothing inherently lightweight about any medium. A text message or video game screen might contain anything, and obviously, you can find just about anything on the internet, from Kafka to Mill to puerile nonsense.

It’s a matter of probability—how rich is the print in most video games vs. most books—and of choice—what websites are kids choosing to read? www.nationalgeographic.com does not crack the top ten, but www.facebook.com does. And how rich is the content there?

Perhaps more than ever, we live in an instant society. Attention spans are shorter than ever. Technology has contributed to this decline, beginning with television. Reading more, when the reading is somewhat rigorous, grows vocabulary, concept and background information. When the reading is largely functional, nothing really changes. We must stretch ourselves when we read. We must put down "People" and "Us" magazines (two staples of many in our culture today) and pick up "Harpers," "Scientific American..." We don't grow if we don't stretch. Pay attention to much of the dribble that passes for news today, too.

Reading is an activity that really needs to be isolated from everything else. It's incredibly easy for distractions to happen which keeps you from really being engrossed in the activity and the story. Unless we can do a good enough job of taking students out of the environment and putting them back into isolation and quiet, like the old fashioned libraries, for example, the art of reading doesn't take place.

A major factor contributing to our decline in being a nation of readers is the inefficient method of beginning reading instruction in the early grades.

Children are taught lists of words 'by sight." They acquire a Limited vocabulary that limits the type of reading material that can be read with pleasure.

True. But NAEP and other standardized reading tests treat "comprehension" as a skill that can be taught directly. "Comprehension" is one of the Five Essentials that define The New Science of Reading. With flawed science and instructionally insensitive tests, it should be no surprise that reading test scores have remained flat.

The purpose of reading is to make meaning. That is literacy. Teachers must teach specific comprehension skills to get kids to the metacognition of reading (thinking about what they are reading) and knowing when they are not understanding the text.

As I am a Blogger and i would like to share with you one thing. I am from Bangladesh and you know, English is not my mother language. So whenever i went to the peoples who are well enough in English asking that "How can I develop myself? Should I read the English literature?" They replied: No! You shouldn't. You better read the online content carefully and read the blogs...ultimately you will be developed.
So my question is: is reading blogs or online content make me better reader? As i believe that better reader means better writer?

@Shamim - quality online content is out there, and the blogs and forums with high traffic are often there because the authors write well AND use proper syntax. Online content has the added benefit of introducing current slang and jargon, which can help provide better insight into a particular culture. Determining what is well-written, and then adopting that style can make you a better writer.

As for the article itself, I see the joke in invoking facebook content, but must share that it is entirely hit and miss, dependant almost wholly on your "friends" and fans.

Ironically, due to the massive "friending" of strangers in order to increase power in many of the Facebook games, I am slowly learning French, and have found myself in numerous literate discussions via a site often associated with textspeak and other nonliterate nonsense.

Such is life.
