There's no room for standardized testing in a modern education system. It needs to be replaced with more effective measures of student ability that don't instigate teaching to the test. Open questions should be used more to give the student an opportunity to demonstrate a full understanding of the subject incorporate their own opinions.

The message is clear: along with, apparently, the rest of the educational thought leaders, standardized testing needs to go.

A curriculum should encourage thinking outside of the box and should also enable a teacher to adapt it to their best teaching strategies, that way the kids get a better education and sets them up better for adult life.

The hardest bit will be breaking the cycle - once we have achieved that, the rest should follow.

Restricting teachers by imposing a narrow curriculum of essentially teaching to the test is a perfect way to demotivate both the teachers and the kids. We need to get out of this cycle.

I agree that US is using the wrong driver in teacher appraisal. A more comprehensive approach for improving the quality of teaching needs to be taken.

One of the messages that I personally appreciated: you can't just hammer away at teachers with the same old standardized testing and expect them to enjoy their profession and teach the kids the important things. It's a recipe for failure, and a bad driver, as Fullan says.

He also seems to believe that US has lost tremendous ground in the last 20 years, and that we need a comprehensive approach to raising the quality of teaching in this country.
His examples of this are insightful.

I think Michael Fullan, who appears to be one of the most respected educational thinkers in the world, has made a number of significant strategic points in this interview. One of his strong points concerns standardized testing. His message to the US is that we are focused on the wrong driver to reform our system.
