If the district wants to base teachers' evaluations on student test scores, teachers must insist that these scores are as valid. That would require that each child be tested individually in the fall by an impartial professional and then again in the spring. This professional must be trained to sort out classroom learning as opposed to out-of-school learning. In addition to this, the test administrator must make note of extenuating circumstances, such as a child's absence from school for much of the year. Obviously the test should be geared to the child's instructional level so if a fifth grader reads at a first grade level, testing should begin there.

Under no circumstances should teachers agree to be evaluated on a ten-dollar group test that has little validity and even less security.

Two can play the testing game so I recommend that teachers go on the offensive: Demand a test that is designed to test the classroom learning of each child during the school year. Too expensive? Oh, well.

How long must the student be physically present in a teacher's classroom for the student's AGT score to be used to evaluate the teacher? One cannot teach students that are not there. Does the student's AGT score have any effect on the student?
