Treating tahecers like adults? Are you crazy?!? It is interesting that you refer to the growth/evolution of unions. Is the union a static entity or a dynamic one? If it is dynamic what is the next stage?

You're absolutely right, Joe and I do not think or say this often. I understand why teachers and administrators would want to try working without the restrictions placed on traditional schools, trading in the union protection in exchange. As a matter of fact, I think the idea of current district employees creating and running charter schools holds a lot of promise. But why lock out the companies already successfully operating such schools in the district that are showing positive results into the bargain? What purpose could it possibly serve?

It seems like LAUSD is taking its queues from the Department of Education in letting politics drive the policy and not the other way around. Congratulations, unions. Enjoy your victory now. But get ready to explain to California voters come election day how you could justify torpedoing a program that showed positive results for the students you claim to care so deeply about and convincing them that you're not entirely out for yourselves.
