"All that education unions do is provide safety for lazy useless teachers. "

Please cite your sources that say that the main thing wrong with education today is "lazy, useless teachers." Show me one legitimate study that proves that there is this huge group of “lazy, useless” teachers that are bringing the system down. The solutions proposed (like school choice) are all based on this notion yet no one has ever showed me any honest proof that this is the case.

Its clear that Unions are past their useful days. All that education unions do is provide safety for lazy useless teachers. Before you freak out, I am a teacher, so I see first hand. What we need is parents held responsible for their children's education. If there are discipline issues ( more than two a quarter) the parents are charged fines. Refuse to pay? Nail their tax returns. When their pocketbooks begin to feel the pain, they will get their students inline.

Tired teacher please state the source of your statistical edivence. We are all concerned with the state of education today. Yet, how far are we as teachers and educators willing to go to improve ourselves education to better serve? Changing test scores is NOT the answer.

statistically speaking, all of these "choices" don't succeed any more then traditional public schools

unless of course your talking about succeeding at perpetuating the ills of our society by misleading the general public, then they are a rousing success

Doug, you can't compare schools systems in Korea, Finland and Singapore with school systems in the U.S. They teach a homogenous group of students who all come from similar economic backgrounds. The U.K. has a heavily unionized school system that is fully public and it's having the same issues that the U.S. is having. School choice might not be the answer, but neither is a system akin to Korea, Finland or Singapore.

School choice is a total distraction from what actually works. The world's leading education nations, Finland, Korea, Canada Singapore and other all build their excellent systems with high quality fully public, heavily unionized school systems. The USA will waste the next 20 years as they did the last 20 years by focussing on vouchers, charters, testing, merit pay and such other idiotic distractions.
