Book Review : Busy Bees at Work and Play

6.6.10 – Michael F. Shaughnessy – Busy Bees at Work and Play is a wonderfully illustrated children’s book that explains to children why mom and dad have to go to work everyday. While this may sound like a simplistic concept, children need to grow up understanding a little bit about work, the importance of work and what adults do during their 9 to 5 jobs and their responsibilities to others and to the community

M. Maitland DeLand wrote this book, and while on the surface it may explain why mom and dad have to go to work- it goes much farther in terms of career, vocational and occupational exploration and helping children to understand the responsibilities that other individuals have to others in our society.

This is a great book for the summer time when children want the attention of their parents, but parents, alas, have to go to their respective jobs and careers. It is a colorful book, nicely illustrated by Lyn Martin and published by Greenleaf Books Press.

Children will learn that there is a time for work and a time for play, and that the time for work is a time for engaging in activities that help others. It should interdependence, and highlights the old phrase from Alfred Adler that “ we are all in this together”.

Further, the writing is fluid and flowing, almost poetry like and thought provoking. Questions abound and children’s imagination is engaged. More about the book can be found at www.delandbooks.com  The author is a radiation oncologist in Louisiana and she specializes in working with chilren’s cancer- a heart wrenching job indeed. This is great summer reading, excellent career exploration and a wonderful gift for kids this summer.
