An Interview with Aaron Nigel Smith: In a Book or A Video?

Michael F. Shaughnessy – Video media is a good way to spread a simple message to a broad range of people. Television has been used as a tool to teach fundamentals concepts to children for many years. In the tradition of Sesame Street I’m hoping to use the video medium to show kids how much fun reading a book can be.

1) Aaron, you have appeared on a number of award winning t.v. shows. Could you tell us about a few of them?

I appear on seasons 9 & 10 of the Emmy Award Winning PBS Kids Show Between the Lions.
Both the live stage show and television show use music as a tool to engage, entertain and educate children. The creators and talent on the show have worked on some of the top children’s TV shows, including Sesame Street, The Muppets, Bear and the Big Blue House and many more. It is always a pleasure to collaborate with such a wonderful team.
2) Now what is this new video all about?
I wanted to celebrate National Reading Month and Dr. Seuss’s Birthday by encouraging children to spell, read, sing and learn.
3) Why the title “In a Book“ if it is really in a video?

Video media is a good way to spread a simple message to a broad range of people. Television has been used as a tool to teach fundamentals concepts to children for many years. In the tradition of Sesame Street I’m hoping to use the video medium to show kids how much fun reading a book can be.

4) Where was this video shot?

The video was shot at the Brooklyn Children’s Museum and The Achievement First Elementary East New York School.

About 50 of the scholars from the Achievement First School actually participated in the video shoot.

5) I understand that March is National Reading Month. What is your involvement?

For the past few years I have participated in the NEA Read Across America celebrations as a musical performer. This year I wanted to celebrate National Reading Month with a song that could be used to promote reading on a broader national level.

6) Could you tell us about this Lionel from PBS kids and his involvement?

I have had the great pleasure of working with Lionel Lion from PBS Kids show Between the Lions for a few years now. I was thrilled to find out that he was in New York City and available to participate in the video shoot. He’s great speller, reader, and singer!
