Nicholls State Graduate to become one of Marine Corps' few black female aviation officers

NEW ORLEANS -- One of Louisiana's own will soon begin her new life as a member of one of the world's most elite military organizations - the United States Marine Corps. Lisa Lawrence, a graduate of Nicholls State University, will be commissioned a second lieutenant on Dec. 11, 2004 at 12 noon in the university's conference room.

Lawrence will join the ranks of about 100 other black female officers currently serving as U.S. Marines. There are approximately 1,000 female Marine officers on active duty. The future second lieutenant is also scheduled to attend The Basic School (TBS) in Quantico, Va. in April of 2005. She will then report to the Naval Flight School in Pensacola, Fla.after completing TBS. Once she graduates from flight school, she will become one of four black female aviators currently serving on active duty in the Marine Corps.

The 22-year old Houston, Texas native attributes her success to the support of her mother, Carol and her aunt, June.
