INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON STUDENT DISCIPLINE:
NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL PERSPECTIVES ON STUDENT CONDUCT 
2 to 5 APRIL 2007 , Potchefstroom , South Africa 

Dear Colleagues and Educators

INVITATION TO PRESENT A PAPER AT AN UPCOMING CONFERENCE

The Research Project on student discipline in schools at the Faculty of Education Sciences of the North-West University (Potchefstroom Campus) takes pleasure in providing academics and Education practitioners an opportunity to meet and exchange ideas on a burning, current national and international issue in education, namely discipline in schools.

The theme of this conference is: Student discipline: national and international perspectives on student conduct.

It is the objective of this conference to address both the empirical bases for discipline in effective schools and to serve as a forum for practitioners to discuss their experiences and identify future research directions.

Join us at our beautiful North-West University in the student city of Potchefstroom , also known as the City of Excellence .

Sub-topics include, but are not limited to:

  • The underlying reasons for misconduct
  • Current forms of misconduct at schools
  • Methods of curbing misconduct
  • Methods curbing serious misconduct
  • Legal rights of educators in discipline
  • Due process rights of students
  • History of student discipline

Apart from selected experts in the field, a number of international authorities have already committed themselves to act as keynote speakers at the conference. These include:

  • Dr. Bill Rogers ( Melbourne , Australia )
  • Dr. Christopher Watkins ( London , England )
  • Prof. Charles Russo ( Dayton , USA )
  • Prof. William Thro ( Richmond , USA )

The conference will include different kinds of activities: Plenary lectures, workshops, group discussions and guided poster presentations. Parallel permanent activities will include notice-boards, exhibitions and stands.

ABSTRACTS AND FULL LENGTH PAPERS

  • We invite you to send a 350 word abstract (including references) to the conference e-mail address to reach the secretariat at soomdt@puk.ac.za by 31 October 2006 .
  • We would like you to present your full length paper before 30 November 2006 . These full length papers will be soft peer reviewed and once your paper has been accepted it will be taken up in a conference proceedings in the form of a hard cover publication of papers, which will be published before the beginning of the conference. Each participant will receive a free copy of this publication at registration.

Your abstract, as well as your full length paper should be in the following format:

First page : Please use the cover sheet at the end of this document for your submission.

Second page (and onwards) :

  • Abstract: 350 words
  • Full length paper: 5 000 words (maximum)
  • Possible structure of both these documents: state the research problem; present the research method used; report your findings and recommendations; references according to the Harvard method.
  • Format: One-and-a half spacing, Arial font 12 in Word.

CONFERENCE OBJECTIVES

The main objectives of this congress are to concentrate on:

  • The latest national and international developments regarding misconduct in schools
  • Basic research dealing with discipline
  • The realistic implementation of research results and the practical "how to" of dealing with misconduct in schools
  • Topics that are relevant to national and international needs, with an eye toward their implementation
  • A comparative perspective of different national and international speakers on discipline in schools
  • The development of a holistic concept on national and international trends on student discipline
  • Networking with other researchers on discipline in schools

  • 11-08-2006 Conference notification and call for papers to be sent out
  • 31-10-2006 Last day for submission of abstract
  • 10-11-2006 Notification of acceptance of abstract for presenting a paper at the

conference

  • 31-01-2007 Last day for submission of full length paper for publication in

conference publication

  • 31-01-2007 Notification of acceptance of paper for inclusion in conference

publication.
